My vision for this “virtual” magazine

I’ve had this idea in the back of my mind for a while now and finally decided it was time to launch my idea to you, a fellow creator.

Imagine a publication that celebrates the broader community of Australian makers who design, make & sell handmade products to discerning customers who love the authentic, personal touch that only Small Businesses can provide. A magazine like this could become more than a magazine—it could become a community and a trusted source of inspiration.

Who is this magazine for?

The ideal reader could be women aged 25-70 who:

  • Support Australian small businesses
  • Go to local Aussie markets or shop online
  • Appreciate beautiful home décor and unique products that are not mass-produced
  • Love gifting handmade items, which can often be personalised
  • Enjoy creative hobbies
  • Want inspiration rather than complicated tutorials

How much does the Magazine cost?

The magazine is completely free for your e-mail subscribers

Who is eligible to be included in this Magazine?

  • Small businesses who reside in Australia
  • You make hand-made products or create hand-drawn illustrations and art
  • You use Instagram for your social media
  • You are willing to join our Group Chat on Instagram to share ideas – we’re all in this together
  • You have an e-mail list with subscribers
  • You know how to use Canva and have either a free or pro account (which is where the magazine will be designed) or you are willing to create a free account in order to access the magazine and design your pages. I can give you lots of help so don’t worry too much about this. N.B. We cannot use pro resources that show the gold crown.
  • You’re willing to offer the magazine to your subscribers and post about it on social media to help spread the word.

Info for Makers & what you Receive

  • Please express your interest using the form at the bottom of this page. I’m capping this at about 40-45 Makers.
  • You will have your very own double-page spread in the Magazine and you can design this as you please or have Lesley help or do it for you.
  • There is a small fee for being a Maker in the Magazine. This is $7 per publication and goes towards the huge amount of time involved in making this magazine look gorgeous, helping you design your spread (if required) and adding links throughout the magazine to your social media handles and product pages.
  • I also prepare a flip-book of the magazine which your subscribers can view online and download to their devices.
  • The time and management of the Instagram Group where we will bounce around ideas and help each other.

What can you include as a Maker in the Magazine?

The left page is about readers and potential customers getting to know you and your brand. This will include a picture of yourself or your logo, your business name, website and social media links and a description of your business plus any of the following ideas:

  • your story and how your small business came to be
  • any discount codes you wish to offer or giveaways
  • what makes your business unique
  • workshop photos, works in progress, your studio
  • mockups of your products
  • where you get your inspiration from
  • your favourite tools
  • awards you’ve received
  • training or courses you’ve done

The right page is all about your products, showcasing them however your please, what’s new, what you’re working on now. These will all be linked to where your products are for sale eg. Etsy or Made It or your own Website for example.

How many issues of the Magazine will there be in a Year ?

I was thinking every 3 months so 4 issues per Year but we could also do a couple of extra Magazines around Events such as Mother/Father’s Day, Easter, Christmas etc. Let’s discuss this in the Instagram Chat Group.

This magazine will showcase handmade Australian products by Small Businesses across categories such as textiles, ceramics, books, jewellery, pet products, woodworking, candles, skincare, children’s items, adult apparel, home décor, stationery, and art.

It would become a publication readers eagerly anticipate, while giving small, like-minded, Australian Makers valuable exposure and reinforcing the magazine’s role as the place to discover exceptional handmade work.
